Through the eyes of Seaman, the reader experiences the dangers of the Mississippi River, the grandeur and the difficulties of crossing the Rocky Mountains, the friendship and help of Sacajawea, meetings with Native American's (some friendly, some menacing), attacks from grizzlies and buffalo, and, more horrible for Seaman, the kidnapping of Seaman himself!
